We are delighted with the amount of interest in Year 5's finding of a possible meteorite. We decided to consult with Dave Shave-Wall, Chairman of the Basingstoke Astronomical Society about our exciting find.
Mr Shave-Wall kindly spent time examining the rock and discussing it with other society members, and has informed us that unfortunately it is not a meteorite - although he did say that he could understand why we thought it might be. He told us that they had taken into account the lack of magnetism, the weight of the rock and also the presence of clear layers inside the rock, in reaching this conclusion. Whilst it might not be the news we were really hoping for, we know that the children had good fun researching meteorites!
The project this term has inspired children in so many ways and has been the inspiration for this poem written by Lucy M from Year 5.
All About Space
- There are 8 planets,
- That orbit the Sun,
- But people and animals,
- Live on just one.
- The Earth is our planet,
- We must take good care,
- Of the air, land and water,
- That all people must share.
- The Sun keeps us warm,
- Wherever we are,
- All our light comes,
- From this great big star.
- Are rockets the best,
- To travel in space?
- With one great big blast,
- You can go any place!
- Astronauts travel,
- A long way through space,
- They learn lots of facts,
- That they bring back to base.
The Basingstoke Astronimical Society is a welcoming group of astronomers of varying expertise who meet regularly at Cliddesden Primary School.
