The Rotary Club Young Writer and Young Photographer competitions both proved popular among children again this year and included some outstanding entries following the theme of 'Our World Is Beautiful'.
Howard Swalheim, Ian Wilkinson and Peter Leach of the Odiham and Hook Rotary Club joined children for their class assembly on Monday 16th May to present awards for winners of both the written and photographic competitions. The Rotary Club members extended their thanks to Miss Van Rooyen, pictured with the winners and Mr Swalheim, for coordinating each of these popular competitions in school.
The Young Writers and Young Photographers competitions each followed the theme of 'Our World Is Beautiful'. Writers were invited to compose a poem or prose of up to five hundred words that embodied this theme. Photographers were invited to produce a portfolio of three photographs based on the theme and fifty words that explained the inspiration for their photographs.
The Young Writers competition winner was Charlotte M. The judges said that Charlotte's poem, 'Our World In Winter' was well structured, mature and balanced. They particularly enjoyed the strong and imaginative vocabulary and how carefully chosen single words conveyed greater meaning.
Two runners up were chosen in the Young Writers competition. Runner-up Mae T was praised for her strong text being relevant to the theme. Judges enjoyed the poem by runner-up Millie T, who was also praised for her strong, clear and coherent poem.
In the Photographic competition, judges decided that three photographs by Eleanor M should win. They said that her images were each distinct, included a good range of colours and textures and were also technically sharp and well exposed.
Runner-up Holly B was praised for the correlation between her written inspiration and the pictures she took. Judges enjoyed the similarity of Holly's images and the use of focus. Evie L was also named runner-up for the good use of focus and combination of different subjects in her portfolio of pictures.
