Children celebrated the Queen's 90th Birthday on Friday June 10th - one day before her official birthday on June 11th - with a street party in the school playground, dressed in red, white and blue and wearing their home made crowns.
For the week of the Queen's 90th Birthday celebrations, children have been preparing for our street party and lessons have included themes and activities related to the Queen and Royal Family.
On Friday morning, staff from Tesco in Hook arrived in school with bread, cheese, ham, cucumber and more to make sandwiches for the party. Children from all year groups joined in throughout the morning in what must have been the longest sandwich making marathon ever to take place in school, with enough sandwiches being made for all 380 children. We thank Tesco Community Champion, Sandra Tidy and her colleagues who came to make sandwiches with children. We are also grateful to Tesco store management for continuing to support Hook Junior School and our promotion of healthy eating through the participation of store staff and supplying food for the occasion.
Meanwhile, in class, children voted for the best homemade crowns in their class. Six crowns from each year group were judged by Mr Myles, Chair of Governors and Mrs Macken, Parent Governor, with two crowns from each year group being chosen as a winner - one made boy and one made by a girl.

At morning break time, prefects ran four cake sale tables for children to buy one of many wonderfully colourful cakes generously contributed by parents and staff. Proceedings from this will be used to improve learning experiences for children whilst at school.
Just after lunch, tables were arranged in the large playground, one long row for each year group and decorated with red, white and blue table covers, union jack flags and song sheets for children to read from.
Children were led out to the playground by class, each wearing their crown. Together with their red white and blue coloured outfits for the day, these added to the celebratory atmosphere. When all children had arrived in the playground, the party began with everyone standing to sing God Save The Queen.

Prizes for the best crowns in each year group were awarded, with a stationery gift set being given to one boy and one girl from each year group.
Finally, children enjoyed sandwiches in the warm afternoon sun to the sound of traditional British music. We are pleased to have been joined for this occasion by Chairman of Hook Parish Council, Jane Worlock and Leader of the Hook Life Church, David Grant. Also present were a members of the Balfour Beatty construction team, taking a well earned break from their work and enjoying a slice of cake.

Thank you to everyone that contributed to making our celebratory street party so enjoyable for children. We are particularly grateful to those of you who have supported your children in making their crowns and outfits worn by children on the day, and also to everyone who donated cakes for children to sell in order to raise funds for the school.
