Thursday is the final full day of activities for year 6 children at Marchants Hill and there are plenty of activities still to try.

The third full day of activities and children still have plenty to try out. Most have now completed the activities that involve getting wet (the raft building and the mud challenge course), making today has been a relatively clean and dry one for everyone.

For those who are still seeking an adrenaline rush, the powerful has been their answer. Powerfan is a thirteen meter high pole, fitted with climbing pegs and a platform at the top. Wearing a harness and safety hat, children are tethered to a rope for their climb to the top. Step by step they ascend and when at the top they stand on a small platform before stepping off the edge for a free fall experience, slowed by the fan mechanism that is attached to their safety line. For most, just taking the free fall is enough - for others, striking some poses while falling is just as important with superman and skydiving being popular positions for the trip back down to earth!

Some groups went into the woodland to learn about survival skills in ’survivor'. The first part of survivor is making a shelter. With the guidance of their instructor, children have a small collection of resources to work with and build their own shelter among the trees. Using their newly acquired knot tying skills form the raft building challenge, children fastened tarpaulin to trees and arranged wood to make their shelter. They added their own touches with other things they found, making fireplaces with stones and seats from small logs. The second part of survivor is learning how to make a fire - but not until everyone has listened to some safety guidance and discussed the three elements required to start a fire. With a flint and steel in hand, everyone uses these to light a small piece of cotton wool and string, demonstrating how a fire can be started in the wild, assuming you have the right resources with you.

Thursday night concludes with a disco after dinner. With bags already packed everyone is set for their final morning of activities on Friday before boarding the coach for the trip back to school.
