Children in year 6 took part in an evacuation as part of their World War Two studies, bringing the wartime experiences of children to life.
Year 6 pupils Jessica C and Holly P describe their experience:
On Monday the 13th of November, we had our Evacuation day as part of our topic on World War II.
In the morning, some of the parents came into school to help and inspected us (by checking our nails and clothes) to see if we were capable of doing the jobs given. Some of them were: tidying the classroom, leaf picking and washing the windows. They were very dull jobs!
After that, we went to Hook train station to experience what the evacuees would have gone through as they got on the train. We discussed what they must have felt and what emotions must have been going through their heads. Then we went back to class and wrote a diary entry as if we were children being evacuated to the countryside.
In the afternoon we learnt how to swing dance with a partner! It was a popular dance near the end of the war as a celebration. We had a lovely demonstration by Mr French and Miss Barrett! Although most of us were slightly apprehensive because boys had to dance with girls, by the end of it we were all really enjoying ourselves and having a good time. Overall, this year’s Evacuation day was a great success and we all enjoyed it thoroughly!
